The Story of Jake

In June of 2004 my husband and I were babysitting for my nephews and decided to take a trip to Shake-A-Paw of Toms River to keep the children occupied by letting them see the pupppies.  We had no intentions on purchasing a new puppie but much to my supprise I found the most adorable little Beagle and fell in love at first sight.  He was the most adorable little puppie, he followed us around, tugged on my pants and cried when I put him back in his crate.  I felt like he was sent to be with me and our new family, I had to have him.  We were newleyweds, just married in January, and had bought our first home that had a fenced in yard with a dog of our own already  so I decided to do some sweet talking and eventually convinced my husband into purchasing Jake.  The day we went to buy him we were told he had a slight cold and we could not take him home for a few days, the time we waited was like an eternity, we were so excited to bring him home, we went back to Shake-A-Paw and we were told he still had a slight cold but if we brought him to the Vetrinarian with in a couple days he would be fine.  We got home with our newest family member and although he was acting a little lithargic he was still playing with us and we were so happy to have him home.  The following day I took him to our Vet, she said that Jake probably should not have been sold just yet because there was a lot of mucus there but she gave me an antibiotic for his cold and also for the Coxciddia (worms) they found in his stool sample.

The following morning I awoke to find Jake limp in his cage, he was barely breathing so I rushed him  back to the Vetinary office.  They took xray's of Jake and diagnosed him with severe pneumonia, one of his lungs was completely filled with mucus and the other more than three quaters full. We were told that he would not make it through the night, that they actually did not know how he lasted this long.  We were devistated, we called Shake-A-Paw, they told us we could bring the dog back and pick a new one but the girls and our Vetinary office said thet they would let Jake die, besides the fact that even though we only had him for a couple of days he was part of our family and we loved him.  Our vetinary office held an oxygen mask on Jakes face for a few hours and told us he might be able to breath on his own for a short time if we wanted to bring him to the Emergency Vet. they could give him better care, the only problem was they were about a half hour away so we had to be quick or Jake could die.  My husband and I rushed Jake there but were told that it was unlikely that Jake would make it through the night.  They put him in a big glass oxygen tank with a bunch of IV's, it was the most horrifying thing I had ever seen.  I did not think anything could ever be worse but I could only imagine if we had children how awful this would be to them.  Jake made it through the night but showed no signs of improvement. We would go and visit him every day and just look at this helpless little guy through a glass window, about four days later we finally got some good news, Jake was till in severe condition but able to breath on his own for a few minutes, he still needed to be in the oxygen tank but we were able to take him out and hold him for about five minutes.

The following day we were told that they believed that with alot of care and veterinary visits Jake would probably make it.  Jake remained in the oxygen tank for a couple days and the hospital for another week to monitor his prognosis and we were told that Jake would need to be seen at our Vet every two weeks for repeat x-rays to be sure that he was getting better not worse.  We were also told that Jake could possibly have learning disabilities due to lack of oxygen to his brain.  About $5000 dollars later Jake was well, but we were not.  We were just married and spent all of our money on a house and wedding, we put Jakes expenses on our American Express but now had to come up with the money to pay it at the end of the month.  I had a Chevrolet Cavalier Convertable that I just loved, it was such a fun car but the only thing we could to do pay for Jakes expenses was sell it.  When we purchesed Jake we got an insurance, Pet Protection Plan, that would pay up to $1000 dollars or the dogs purchase price if the dog were to become ill.  Shake-A-Paw is trying to tell us that what we recieve back from the insurance angency is inculded in the refund that we will get from them but I paid for this insurance and believe that the refunds should be seperate. It is now over a year later and we still do not have any money back from Shake-A-Paw, we sent them all of our medical bills along with two Unfit For Purchase certificates and have not seen a dime, despite numerous phone calls we never hear back from them.  We would not change anthing that we did, we love Jake, he is part of our family and worth every penny. But we would like our story to be told so other families do not suffer as we did, BUYERS BEWARE.
